Bbq Equipment

I plan on taking a little trek?

I plan on taking a little trek, i am from Birmingham UK.

I will probably be with 2 friends (3 of us in total). The trek will probably only be for one night, i cant decide whether to trek from home outwards to a rural location several hours away (walking time) or get dropped off several miles away from home and head back towards home and spend a night somewhere.

I intend for us all to stay in a tent somewhere, not neseccary a camp site. Probably have a BBQ etc. I basically want it to be completly ballsy and independant.

Anyone know ifs its cool to just sleep in a field in a tent? And what areas and equipment do you reccomend, that 3 people could carry. Disposable BBQ’s, pop-up tents etc.

You really do need to stay in a camping site. If you just pitch up in a field, then you’ll be on private property and therefore trespassing, so the farmer will have every right to throw you off at any point of the day or night. It’s not worth the risk! Even if you do make it through the night uninterrupted, what might seem like a pleasant open meadow when you arrive in the early evening could have a herd of cows emptied into it at the crack of dawn, and you might find yourself face-to-face with an angry bovine when you poke your head out of the tent at 6am.

If you’ve never camped before (and I get the impression that you haven’t) then it’s worth checking out the camp sites on your route. You’ll still be travelling independently, and you certainly won’t arrive to a home-cooked meal and a TV, but you’ll have access to gas and electricity, fresh water and toilets.

Pop-up tents are great to pitch, but not so easy to put away again, or necessarily to carry; they fold up into a big round disc (about a metre in diameter) whereas proper tents will fit into a tube-like case. Pop-ups are usually quite light, since they don’t require poles, but they aren’t nearly as sturdy or protective against the elements because they usually only have a single skin. Since you are only going for one night, a pop-up should be fine. However if you intend to use it again, I’d invest in a proper tent. They’re not *that* expensive but get a decent one and it really will last.

And as for food and cooking equipment, it’s entirely up to you – that’s the fun bit! How much you think you’ll eat, what you can realistically cook on a disposable bbq / campfire / portable stove. (NB Be very careful about lighting fires in random areas since it’s both dangerous and often illegal – again, another reason why it’s good to stick to campsites). And again, it’s only one night, so sensible provisions aren’t necessarily a problem :) Remember to plan for all eventualities, be aware of the potential dangers and illegalities but beyond that, just have fun and enjoy the adventure!
